Maslow's Blueprint

Maslow's Blueprint

A Poem by Joshua Ramirez
"

This is a poem about Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. He's an American Psychologist. ~written January 29, 2017~

"

Abraham Maslow, A. psychologist.

Made a simple system many can call bliss

to the development, to the science.

Five decades ago, we needed to heed

his plan, his blueprint: Hierarchy of Needs.

Triangular figure, the monolith

which still stands to this day, a blueprint with

the diff’rent priorities of our needs.

Possibly even revealing the greed

affluent nations carry in pockets.

Multi-level pyramid, arbitrary

cos it won’t fit in every socket.

Focus on the physiological.

It comes with urgency: food, air, sleep, sex,

Need it badly? All biological.

Needs wanted simply for our survival.

We want safety, we want order and law,

Comes from security, stability.

We want predictability, predictable reality, how ludicrous!

It’s filled with flaws, isn’t that the truth to this?

We look for intimacy, we want friends.

We want more trust, acceptance, affection.

We all want someone there with hands to lend

so much love, as we start to rise above.

Have I reached mastery? What’s my status?

Need more achievement, strength in dominance.

What do I want? Prestige? Yes! Why it gleams

as I work hard to lengthen self-esteem!

More and more as I climb on top, knowledge

at every stop. Let me go to college,

Grow older with books, this time I won’t botch it!

What’s next for me? The looks I won’t let slip.

Here begins my noble search for beauty,

Look in the mirror, and who do I see?

Such balance to my soft skin, no callous.

And my flawless form will become adored.

So much time, much development and growth,

My high self-fulfillment, something others

will loathe. I see it now; I see the peak!

What’s become of my personal potential?

What is the next step to be impactful?

I touch the sky, transcendency, supremacy,

where my sole virtue is, no longer heresy,

to drop my legacy, aid others gracefully,

as they walk shamefully, I hold them joyfully,

I tell them come with me, we fly, then they will see,

look at your own worth, cycle recurs, finally.

This is super interesting. I spent a lot of time studying Maslow's Hierarchy in college and you have done a wonderful job of transforming a concept into art. Your word choices are very interesting and fit the piece perfectly. The tone and pace of the poem moves well and each thought seems developed enough to let the reader understand but not get confused.
You did a great job!
