Soul MatesA Story by LúciaIs there anything else out there?
I was walking along the street, alone with my thoughts,
when I bumped into a tall and beautiful man, knocking over his books and notes
on the floor. Some of the notes were blown away by the wind. “I’m sorry.” I said embarrassed trying
to pick up some of the papers that were flying over our heads. Apologetically I looked at him to say one more time “I’m
sorry” when I saw the most beautiful and bright blue eyes smiling at me. My
mouth was opened but no words came out. “I’m sorry. Did you
hurt yourself?” He said, smiling. “No. Not at all. I’m
so sorry. Let me buy you a coffee or some other drink.” “Please, let me.” I was surprised with myself. I never invited someone for
a drink, let alone someone that I never had seen before. It was a strange
impulse, but I felt weirdly attracted to that man. I looked around for a coffee
shop and there it was one, just on the opposite side of the street, with a
strange name, “Lost Souls”. In fact, it was a teashop. I had never noticed it
before. We crossed the street and we went in. It was a beautiful
and cosy place, and the air was golden coloured and it smelled like roses. The
waiter led us to a small table at the window. We sat down and order some hot tea.
It was cold outside and the sky threatened some rain. All that excitement made
me feel colder and trembling, completely different from him, who looked very
calm and serene as if he knew exactly what was happing. After a moment of
embarrassing silence, while waiting for the tea, and just out of the blue, he
asked me: “What happened to your boyfriend?” “He died in a car accident.” I replied feeling compelled
to answer without questioning it. “How long ago?” “It’s been three years, now.” “You haven’t forgotten him… and since then you never
looked at another man. Why?” “Why? Because I still love him, and I know that I will
never find another man like him, a pure gentle kind hearted man.” “You loved each other very much.” “Yes. I think we were meant to be together forever,
eternality. But destiny played a joke on us…” “Do you believe in destiny or in soul mates?” “Yes. I do. Jeremy and I were soul mates. I’m sure of
that.” “Do you believe that we can come back from the dead?” “I don’t know. I never thought about it.” “Don’t you believe in reincarnation?” “Maybe…” Although the conversation was very odd, I felt quite
comfortable near that man. His ways and manners were quite familiar to me. As I
was preparing myself to answer his last question he leaned over my shoulder and
whispered in my ear: “Wait for me, my
love. I will come back to you.” I felt like losing the ground, like I was walking
through thin air. My heart started to bump faster and tears started to run over
my face. I knew so well that unmistakable voice, most of all I knew heartily
those words. They were the last words that Jeremy had said to me before he died.
