The Legacy Chain pt1A Story by Shawn StClairAn experiment in finding my writing skills and possibly my place. Please let me know what you think.
The rain peppered the charred and broken streets of Tormen breaking the silence that had fallen over the city just moments before. Steam rose from the hot pavement, giving off the scent of decay and blood. Just past midnight, as always, the war took its moment of silence holding its breath in remembrance of peace that had almost been.
Zora Noreese stepped from the shadows of an alley into the pale blue lamplight, one of the few lights that remained on this street. She wrinkled her nose as the steam rose and picked her way slowly to the broken hover tank. Catlike steps over broken bodies and torn pavement brought her to the left side of the tank.
Carefully peering through the perma plexy windows, Zora sighed as she saw the right side of the tank was missing, or at least a good chunk of it. Slipping up the side, she climbed inside and began her search.
"Anything?" came a male voice in her left ear. She jumped a little, glancing about and continued her search. Finding the rations compartment still intact, Zora tapped just behind her left ear before beginning to stuff a backpack as full as she could.
"Yes, full ration pack on its way." she whispered, knowing the small device embedded in her neck would pick it up easily.
"Good, hurry. There is an electromagnetic anomaly heading our way." her commander said. He was nervous she could tell, but it was to be expected. No one was suppose to be out at this time as it was peace hour. It was their best chance of getting what they needed before the bombardment started again, so Zora had volunteered.
"Almost done." she lied as she closed the now full backpack and continued to search what was left of the tank. This was a fresh kill, so no one had had time to clean up, or otherwise blow up the remains. Removing several pieces of technology, some looked like hand scanners and some sort of compact tech pack, Zora stepped out the broken side of the tank.
The torso of an enemy solder lay next to the tank, a utility belt and backpack still looking mostly new, caught her attention. So close to the tank it should have been destroyed with the blast, she thought, as she stared at it. All of his limbs were missing, burnt as if by laser fire or cut off on purpose, or his torso had been saved somehow, but his limbs and head burnt away when the tank exploded. Quickly she made up her mind and retrieved both the pack and the belt.
"Whats taking so long?" the commanders voice asked impatiently, an edge of panic creeping in. "That storm or whatever is almost here."
"On my way." Zora whispered, as the rain started to come down heavier with tiny chunks of ice biting into her exposed flesh. A lighting strike blossomed to the west, illuminating the edge of ground covering cloud. Hurrying across the street, she reached the safety of the shadows as the cloud flowed like water into the street and over the tank. Turning and running down the alley, she heard the tank explode behind her. Quickly opening the ground cover, Zora dropped down into the hole and let the cover fall back into place. A whiff of some spice cuaght her nose as the cloud seemed to tug at the capstone before it fell closed.
"Im safe, all is well. I will be home in a few minutes and I have food." Zora said as she relaxed and trudged on through the underground.
