A Chapter by Lowesy

Another entry... Song lyrics!

What has happened to musicians?! Why can’t they write songs nowadays?!

A couple of examples I’ve heard recently are:

“Pretty b*****s only can get in my posse

Yes, my name is Roman, last name is Zolanski

But no relation to Roman Polanski

Hey yo, baby bop, f-ck you and your EP,

Who's gassin' this hoe? BP?

(Nicki Minaj, ‘Stupid Hoe’)

Two More Shot... Now We In And Up On It

Two Girl And I'm Ready For Jump On It

Two To My Word Now I'm Ready To Jump On It

Ready For Run On It, Ready For Jump On It

Tag Teamin'...for Pump On It”

(Sean Paul, ‘She Doesn’t Mind’)

“Now everybody want my recipe

Tell a jealous chicken I don't know what the beef is

I'm just making money for my grankids' nieces

I'mma work hard, that's my thesis

This beat is the sh*t, feces”

(Will.I.Am, ‘The Hardest Ever’)

(Ella ella eh eh eh)

Under my umbrella

(Ella ella eh eh eh)

Under my umbrella

(Ella ella eh eh eh)

Under my umbrella

(Ella ella eh eh eh eh eh eh)

(Rihanna, ‘Umbrella’)

“Baby, baby, baby oooh

Like baby, baby, baby nooo

Like baby, baby, baby oooh

I thought you'd always be mine (mine)”

(Justin ‘f*****g’ Bieber, ‘Baby’)

I understand that there decent songwriters out there still. Ed Sheeran, Snow Patrol and Emeli Sande, Jessie J, Shinedown and Noah and the Whale are just a few. But it seems people nowadays are more willing to listen to awful lyrics so long as there’s a consistent beat for them to dance to, rather than emotional, complicated and clever lyrics.

I know this wasn’t as funny as the last couple of entries and I do apologise. I just really, really, really hate Justin Bieber.

Comments are welcome!

Coming from a girls perspective, I personally am disgraced by the lyrics of most rappers and female artists. Sex sells, so that's what they resort to in order to get to the top. Nicki Minaj is a horrible artist in my opinion, and I don't listen to much rap in general. Rihanna has gone down that same path (although her earlier songs were decent, and very feel-good).

Justin Bieber really is not that bad. Baby was one of his first songs, it was cute, and it was aimed at teenage girls who obviously liked it. His song 'Somebody to Love (ft. Usher)' was a remix of the classic Somebody to Love, but it made it more youthful, and was actually very well done. It may not be the most clever or sophisticated, but it makes people feel good about themselves, and that is ultimately what matters.

Personally I think Jessie J. is in the same boat as Nicki and Lady Gaga. Women who have talent and drown it out with scanty clothes, the promotion of rather sexual and perverse behavior. It's just gross, and it's not showing girls how they should really be. Personally I'd rather listen to a song that values a girls integrity, as opposed to one that demeans it.

There are a lot of good artists, they simply don't get the limelight because the media chooses to promote thigns that are more "fun" and "hip". There are the occasional hits that fall through the cracks of mainstream, while most stay Indie. If you look in the right places, there are plenty of amazing artists.

And before everyone goes "Oh she's just a boy band fangirl", no, I'm not. Most of what I listen to is Owl City, Coldplay, OneRepublic, etc. I have a varied taste. But when I'm feeling like crap because the males that I know don't think I'm "hot" or cute, or whatever, it is semi-comforting to have songs like Somebody to Love or What Makes You Beautiful (OneDirection) to keep you company. That keeps a lot of girls from the brink.

I agree with your words. Few songs have meaning or purpose. Some are impossible to dance to. I must return to the old songs. I do have some modern favorites. A excellent chapter. A lot of good statements.

Hey, Ease up on the Biebs!! lol
He's not that bad, actually...very talented...
But I do agree with you, some songs can have vulgar lyrics that demean it's subject matter... Thanks for sharing.

How can you criticize a line as meaningful and proufound as "(Ella ella eh eh eh eh eh eh)"
Followed by the immortal "Like baby, baby, baby oooh"...These lines will live long after others are dust.

And I'm afraid some of the poetry on this site isn't much better...
