Chapter Three~

Chapter Three~

A Chapter by Katelyn

Jules opened her eyes three days later, stuck with the same knowledge that she had at the start. Her name, her brother's name, and Shay, the guy who plucked her up from under a car and brought her to safety. Safety was selective, though, considering that there were probably thousands of diseases strapped to the walls and waiting to wiggle their way into any open cut or sore. She tried not to think that much into it, instead focusing her attention on Wendy's hands, which were administering a clear shot of something into the tube that was plunged into her arm.

"What is that?" Jules' voice trembled lightly as her eyes kept glued to the sharp end of the injector.

Wendy glanced over her shoulder as she deposited the used device into the hazardous container hanging on the wall. "Antibiotics," She paused for a minute to slide the rubber gloves from her hands. "it's only a precaution, though. We want to make sure that your injuries don't become infected."

"Oh," Jules relaxed slightly and ran her free hand through her hair. "Do I have to get that everyday?"

"Twice, actually. It follows the pain medication and some other stuff." She took a couple of instruments off of the metal rolling cart and walked back over to Jules. She recognized one of the tools as a stethoscope and the other as a thermometer. "I'm just going to listen to your heart and take your temperature, and then I'll be going."

"Okay."

Her hands moved to latch the rubber nubs into her ears before taking the end plate and pressing it to Jules' chest. The two waited in silence for a while as she played a game of chess on Jules' skin, moving the piece to a new, strategic place.

"You know, Shay has been sleeping in the lobby these past few days." Wendy began after jabbing the plastic-covered end of the thermometer under her tongue. "He's strangely dedicated to you."

"Yah...why es heh, ahny whay?" Jules fought with the plastic stick under her tongue, trying to make it move to the side so she could talk normally, but Wendy made sure that it stayed put.

"I don't know," She answered with a half-smile. "Frankly, I've never seen anything quite like it."

Jules frowned, waiting impatiently until the beeping noise went off and the thermometer was removed from her mouth so she could ask another question. "You don't think he's...like...you know...obsessed, do you?"

She shook her head. "No, no. If he was obsessed, he wouldn't be down in the lobby."

Jules swallowed the saliva forming in her mouth. "Good."

"Well, I have to go make some other rounds." She placed her hands on the cart and began pushing it towards the door. "I'll come back around at noon, okay?"

"Okay, but wait   " Jules called her back over. "Have you heard back from my brother, yet?"

Her face twisted and a look of uneasiness flashed through her eyes. "No, but   " She looked over her shoulder to make sure nobody was there, and then in a low voice, whispered, "there was a man here to see you yesterday night. He was claiming to be your fiancée or something   "

"Is he?" Jules felt her mind stinging, like someone slapped it several times in a row. She felt waterlogged and heavy with the absence of knowledge. "I mean, were my parents with him, or was he alone? Is there anyway to prove that he is or what?"

"So, you don't remember?" Wendy folded her lips together in thought. "Does the name Stephan Mitchell ring a bell?"

There was no spark of familiarity like before.

"No," Jules stated with a tone of assurance lined with a layer of confusion. "No, it doesn't sound like a name I've heard before."

"Okay," She said, raising her voice to its normal volume. "Like I said, I'll be back at noon. Don't go running off on me."

Jules raised her arm with the tube into the air as far as the plastic would allow. "I kinda have the hospital version of shackles here."

Wendy smirked and rolled her eyes. "Trust me, you could be stuck with way worse."

Jules watched as she turned into the hallway and disappeared from view, wishing that it was her that could walk away.
