Spirit

This is a poem I wrote back in high school about the spirit of a horse. Enjoy!

The spirit of a horse is never to be broken
They hold a magnificent beauty
That makes them who they are
And will forever be

Their hooves represent freedom
Freedom to run
And freedom to live

Their eyes are like two crystal balls
Dominated by wisdom and power
And their mane and tail are like flames
Flapping fiercely in the wind

The spirit of a horse is beautiful and shall never be broken
For if it is, you're not only taking away their beauty
But their will to live

Yes, your love of horses comes through quite well in this piece. It is wonderful that you show such a deep degree of care and respect to such a majestic creature. I think some would say that the spirit of a horse must be broken in order to ride a horse. You show us a different take on that idea. I think the description you provide here fits horses like the wild mustangs of the West or the Poneys of pony of chincoteague Island. They have their spirit and they maintain their way of life.

Now as for the piece. I like the chosen words for their imagery. Especially with the entirety of the third verse/stanza or what ever you care to call it. I think this is a nice piece that shows the love, admiration and beauty you see in them. Expressing that sort of emotion is never an easy act, often the pieces come out heavy handed or lacking of depth or power. You did good here.

Yes, you obviously do love horses.

I love horses as well, but we come from a
different perspective. I grew up on a cattle
ranch in South Dakota. A cowboy was only as
good as his horse.
Now I live in California and a young lady keeps
her horses in my pasture where they simply eat
and run and play. She is a professional roper,
and she is just as good as her prize horse.

I love horses too! The only thing I would do to this is add "also" In the last line, it would make it much stronger. Other than that I love it, it's a great piece and you can feel the passion for the creature in the words. Very nicely done!
