The Demon

The Demon

A Poem by Love Well Spent
"

For all you aspiring writers who struggle with writer's block, here is a poem for you...

"

Writer’s block, it’s the worst

It feels like I am under a curse

All I want is to write a stanza or two

But as of now, my mind hasn’t a clue

I bite my lip, so frustrated I could scream

This excruciating brain clog is getting too extreme

I’m a writer, and this I know for certain!

Even so, this false insecurity proceeds to worsen

It taunts me, saying, “You’ll always be worthless”

I close my eyes and think, no, I have a purpose

It laughs and sneers at me, causing my anger to rise

My confidence is restored and I refuse to listen to its lies

“True, you might have a hold of me now,” I taunt in return

“But I’ll overpower you, the wheels have already begun to churn

You see, I wrote this poem off the top of my head

And now, the words that were stuck have indeed begun to spread!

I cry out in triumph at this very poem that I have created

It might not be my best, but at least the demon's ego is deflated

So hah! Take that, you ugly, paralyzing self-doubt

I smile and say, “Go to hell, and please never come out!”

Like this a lot. To anyone self doubt is defiantly a demon. As for writers block, I can say I've subscribed to so agony at times. It made me think of how I then do stream of consciousness pieces in order to break out of the rut. Which if you did just pull this from your noggin on the fly to write, you did the same. Best cure I know of. Like the wording, the rhymes seem a bit forced sometimes, which skews the rhythm slightly also. I think as an overall this is a brilliant piece.

Somewhere in my Book of Shadows I have a few pieces like this to the demons I have faced and how to be rid of them.

Bravo,
Roman

I totally agree with Roman, this is so relatable among writers and certainly identifiable as a demon. I love the confidence that there are positive things to come at the end, and the smile that comes before the last line.
This reminds me a lot of Coleridge in his emphatic cry that inspiration strikes quickly and unexpectedly and vanishes at the most inconvenient of times.
