That Broken Friendship

A true friend, they say, is there for life
But there are times you feel stabbed with a knife;
When they lie to your face and rip out your heart
But you thought you could trust them right from the start.

 

Friends are forever, they say to you
But how much of this is actually true?
When they're happy to leave, without looking back
And you feel your heart start to crack.

 

They promise they'll never forget you.
But deep down, you truly knew;
They'll forget the times you spent together
Even though, we said, friendship lasts forever.

 

So forget the old, and look forward to the new;
Don't let this friend make you feel blue.
Lift your head up high; don't be scared
And act like you never even really cared.

"And act like you never even really cared."- Sadly, you can't fool yourself. If you cared, you cared. Relationships of any kind (friendships included) are scary because you never know exactly how the other feels.

What if you care more than they do? Nobody wants to go on caring when someone else has stopped.

That is why I simply put 'act like you never even really cared'. Of course, if you were friends with this person, you cared about them. But if you act like you didn't, you're not showing signs of weakness so that person will struggle to bring you down.

I know with broken friendships I've had, I've always cared and always will. But they don't, so I want to act like it wasn't a big deal. You just have to so you can carry on with your life.

I feel your pain, Louise... some friends just aren't worthy of your love and friendship...
They may just be too selfish to give back...
I believe it starts with self-respect... love yourself enough to say you won't put up with it...

When I wrote this, I was not actually going through what is described in the poem but I am now, so this poem is helping me :)
But I've done what I've said. I told this "friend" I can't deal with all her lies and have told her never to come running back to me. I don't want her in my life if she keeps acting the way she does.

But I have everyone on here... and you all are all I need right now :)

Wow this is rough but you're young! I'm not "old" yet but I what I will say is it's never too late to fix relationship while others are worth throwing away. Some of my best friends at one point I've grown apart over the years, and individuals I hardly knew in school are closest to me today.

Sorry about the life lessons! Haha. As for the poem I like it. One thing I'd look into is approaching it without a rhyme scheme or an alternate one and see if you can find a balance. Sometimes with certain rhyme schemes I get an "up-beat" feeling that doesn't really reflect the subject of the poem.

As a teenager, I know some relationships are unfixable. It is harder to deal with it when young.
When I'm older, I don't know how close I will be with the people I am close to now. In September, I will be attending to college where I will know no-one so it will give me a chance to form fresh relationships with new people. That was really the inspiration to this poem as well as my friend leaving.

And thank you for your very constructive advice! It would've been nice to try out something you said might work, but I really love poems that rhyme, so I think you'll find that all of the poems except for one that I have posted on this site all rhyme really well
