i relate to this...people ask me if i am lonely now...having put aside relationships for awhile...and i say "no, i am alone but not lonely"
I am good with my own company and can be quite amused writing, listening to music, watching tv...whatever.
but lonely is a state of mind and heart...when i was young i thought i was at times when i wasn't with friends...was by myself and felt uninvited....

The most alone I've ever felt was in the recent past when my old mum popped her clogs, gone forever the foundation upon which my life built.
Guess I'm lucky that my wife and daughter are made in her mould :)

I think ...how we "feel" depends upon our momentarys' needs - the demands of our nows' existence. Life IS crowded at times and demands intimacy at others. When we ARE aware of something/someone we lack ...the pause of existence is heavy.
This offering makes a good point. Loneliness is actually an illusion, a product of the mind. It is possible, if the mind is used properly, to be a thousand miles from the nearest human and not be lonely. On the other hand, one can be in middle of Time Square on New Year's Eve and feel desperately isolated. It's all a matter of perspective. A perceptive work here.
I believe in facing death we are at the most alone place in our life we can take no one to go with us and we are saying bye to all we know interesting how the Egyptians coped with this reality i myself have placed my faith with Jesus
Being all alone without having anyone to turn to, much the way some older people are when all their friends and relatives have passed is a terrifying prospect. There have been times in my life when I have been surrounded by people and yet feel lonely. There have been other times when I have wished to be totally on my own, for some peace and quiet because I enjoy my own company. I think it truly is a state of mind. An interesting read LauraKate.
this is such an interesting perspective Chris, thank you so much for sharing your thoughts.
