The Visit

The Visit

A Poem by Laura Kate

Last night I was blessed with the memory
of you, and the softest touch of your
skin, as I gently kissed your cheek.
You were fading from me once again,
dying in my arms but this time we both
knew it, so we said our last goodbyes.
'Do you know how much I love you?' you asked.
Of course I did, I always have. The only uncertainty
was how much time we had left, and it was paramount
that you knew of the love I still carried for you.
'I love you around the world and back' I replied, just like
I used to as a child. You smiled and your gaze wandered
past mine into the distance as your head gently turned away.
'I will miss you so much'.
I knew this for certain, because it was already true.
'You are so special.
Please, please come and visit me'.

The way your poem starts out -- first six lines -- I wish I had been the one to come up with those words for my last best friend (RIP). I love how this poem generally seems to be the narrator speaking to someone who's crossed over (but there's some ambiguity which I love, too). I love how it could be about a parent/g-parent or a lover/friend . . . since your sentiments are universally stated. There's a strong sense of longing that I feel most people have felt in all these ways (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie
