Statue

Statue

A Poem by Laura Kate

Statue

I sit

and I wait

Something incredible is supposed to be happening

I'm supposed to be producing it somehow

it should be coming out of me

but it isn’t,

not yet

so I sit

and wait.

Time becomes heavy

like the marble statue

turned to stone

with a dull ache

rooted in place

from its stomach

down through the toes.

I sit

and I wait.

Time becomes cold

Frozen still

like the statue

immobile

Barely breathing

watching everyone else go by.

The life of a statue

Created of the hopes and dreams of the ones who built it

memories of lighter days.

There is also death

Of the blood blocked from running through its veins

Of the spirit taken out of its body

death a part of the life itself

but life doesn't have its fair share

once the body

has turned

to stone

death takes over

it is stronger

much stronger

so I sit

and I wait

something fantastic is supposed to happen

so I sit

and I wait

death is a part of life...and sometimes our muse dies, but like Lazarus is reborn...
and i really like this metaphor.

makes me think of how we get dry sometimes...and we try too hard to get the inspiration back...but it comes back on its own...

death to life....dormancy to inspiration...it will come again...
be patient. when you least expect it...the flow will be immense.

Your lines to me seemed to refer to the fickle muse Laura, who will grace you with her presence when she is ready and not before. Many is the time I have had to sit like stone, waiting for her to return with a flood of ideas. At the moment mine is being tight to say the least. A trickle every now and then and sometimes the start of something with no ending. That's where you took me.

It makes me think of depression. When you are numb with no desire to move or do anything, wondering if It gets better

Thank you for sharing your interpretation it is much appreciated.
Best,

“The hopes and dreams of the ones who built” the statues is the takeaway line for me. Statues are art, artists’ interpretations through their individual senses. The lines and shadows sculpted often tell us more about the artist than the dead model. An original work that forces the reader to reflect.
