i wonder sometimes if the only love that is true to us as poets is the muse...
for me, she remains when all other lovers have gone...
the one true love might just be our writing...
i particularly like these really short pieces that raise questions and allow for us to walk away pondering.

Laura,
I think the true essence of "love" can only be defined, explained, felt, experienced in the moment … and, it is in that moment only the person submersed in it can transcribe what it is, and only to them about what, where, how, and whom it's centered on, in, over, around and through.
One may even have a set definition of love they subscribe to and swear by, but it is only in the moment it's experienced that love truly exists, and it can be as unpredictable as the weather.
If you believe and feel that keeping dedicated and hooked on poetry, regardless its effects (even pain) is true love … then, I must concur that it is for YOU!
Therefore, I accept it, too, 'cause you've made me believe it and feel it's true!
A big HUG of thanks to You … I "love" it! ⁓ Richard 🍃

Your poem ends as a rhetorical question and leave room for interpretation and debate.
'My poetry is painful
but I come back to it still.
Isn't that what true love is?'
Upon seeing the finished product, generally speaking, in creativity and innovation there is a process that's rewarding after inspiration, thinking, arranging, structuring and much perspiration. Thus such process before the finished product can be considered 'pain', though others would absolutely say that the whole creative process is joyful and the finished product is the icing on the cake.
And it is this joy, passion and reward that makes a poet keep writing.
Conversely in matters of love when man and woman share their intimate time and space, what keeps them going is the experience and joy of affection, care and togetherness. Thus positive stimuli propel and perpetuate the overall engineering of a relationship.
But if hate, insults and domestic abuse predominate in a relationship, it is not an encouraging thing to keep coming back to.
Therefore pain is not what true love is!
But true love is beauty, joy, togetherness, playfulness, smiles, creativity...

I wrote this based purely on a feeling which I experienced writing poetry about a love lost - only other time I could remember this same feeling was at the time I learned the love was lost. I love how you compare the two feelings and draw a pretty logical conclusion. I wonder how different our individual experiences of love may be. Thank you again, Laura
