Common denominator

Common denominator

A Poem by Laura Kate
"

A little epiphany

"
Occasionally,
when I least expect it,
I am struck with the feeling,
of being completely and madly in love.

It comes in waves,
it's a powerful, exciting feeling,
but it also confuses me,
because I spend my nights alone.

So, I decided to search back through
re-collections
of past lovers and wondered
if there was something
I had missed.

Barcelona?
Los Angeles?
Cape Town?
Oxford?

...no.

My heart doesn't long to be
in any of these places.
My soul wasn't left behind
with any of those faces.

So I waited,
and i wondered,
and gently the answer came to me;
'I' am the the common denominator

my heart has been happy with me,
looking after me,
loving me,
all along.

maybe that is the easiest road...Emily Dickinson was a total recluse, and doubtful she ever had any boyfriends, real ones...but in her imagination she longed for several men...mostly male poets who really floated her boat.
love is often confusing...not being in love can feel lonely, but being in love can be so chaotic...
so which do we choose? or does it choose us?

They say you must love yourself before you can truely love another. You capture this sentiment well in this freeverse piece.
