The Devil's Repentance

The Devil's Repentance

A Story by D.S. Patton
"

Dameon and Drake--demons who serve Lucifer--are vying for the throne seated at his right hand. Who will be successful?

Dameon

The legion--trained, regimented, and skilled soldiers designed to destroy God’s people--thunderously applauded me as I walked into the tabernacle. Even Lou stood up from his throne and greeted me as I entered. I lingered in front of the threshold and lapped up their praise like a thirsty dog.

“You’re almost as good as me,” Lou said smiling, once he saw me standing near the entrance. “Come.” He held out his arm and invited me to the altar.

I eyed the throne seated next to him as I approached. If things worked out according to plan it would be mine, and I would be second in command--inferior only to Lou and seated at his right hand. It was between Drake and me. But after my most recent conquest, how could Lou not choose me? The throne was mine.

“Dameon,” Lou said, sitting down, “regale us with the tale of your most recent assignment.”

“As you wish father.” I bowed down in front of him, as custom, before turning to face the legion. “One word…suicide.” The legion erupted into applause. Getting the children of God to kill themselves was highly regarded. Nothing rivaled them taking the very life God died for them to have. I visualized myself spitting in God’s face every time one of them did. “It was pathetic. He begged for forgiveness before he put the gun in his mouth and blew his brains out through the back of his head. His blood and brain fragments stained the wall behind him--creating a work of art rivaling the depiction of the fall of man in the Sistine Chapel.” The legion grew louder. They loved to hear the gory details. “Wait,” I screamed over the cheering, “guess who found him?”

“Who? Who? Who?” They chanted, pumping their fists into the air.

“His mother!”

“Ahhhhhhh,” they screamed, rocking Lou’s throne.

“Annnnnd,” I yelled, “his daughter!”

The legion stood to their feet and celebrated my triumph.

“You should have seen the looks on their faces,” I continued. “The shock. The despair. The devastation. Watching them was like tiny morsels of pure ecstasy. And don’t get me started on their sobs and cries to their precious Lord. Hearing them reverberate in my ears was as close as I’ve gotten to satisfaction and fulfillment.”

“That’s what they get for believing in Him,” Lou scoffed.

“Yeah.” The legion screamed en masse.

Their cheers, clapping, and bowing was exhilarating. I never wanted it to stop. No wonder Lou rebelled against God and convinced one-third of the angels to follow suit for it. It was one of the best feelings ever created.

“That’s all well and good,” Drake shouted, from the back of the tabernacle, “but there’s only cause for celebration if he didn’t believe in Jesus before he transitioned.”

Drake hadn’t cheered or clapped for me once, however, I understood. I would have done the same thing if I realized my dream was over.

“Atheist,” I said, the word with a smile. “I got him to renounce God and curse the Holy Spirt a week before he died.”

He nodded. “The unpardonable sin. Well done…congratulations.”

“Do you honestly mean that?” I teased. “You could at least be a little more enthusiastic. I just delivered your next assignment to you on a silver platter.”

“How so?” he asked unconvinced.

“Her father just scrambled his brains. She’ll be cursing God in a week. After that, it’s child’s play. Rape. Drug addiction. Overdose. I’ll allow you to pick her poison. But long story short…she’ll be dead, and all will be well.”

“You think it’s that easy?”

“It’s always that easy.”

“Well you don’t know her. She’s a child of God.”

“They all are. So what?”

“Well, she knows it, and she believes it. She knows the Word of God. It’s like it’s imprinted on her heart.”

“And? Do what we always do. Twist it just enough for her to doubt and question it. Lou did the same thing to Adam and Eve"and they were in the Garden of Eden with God for Christ’s sake.”

“It’s a different time now. After Jesus died, He sent the Holy Spirt to live on the inside of them. He’s the Spirit of Truth. He communes with her. His Spirt speaks to her spirit and corrects every lie I tell.”

“Enough,” I shouted. Every inch of my spirit wanted to leap from the altar and destroy him. “Forgive me father,” I said, restraining the urge and turning around to face Lou as I bowed at his feet, “for speaking so freely, but no coward should sit at your right hand.” I raised my head and snarled at Drake. “Only the valiant should inherit that authority.”

“It is well my son. I agree. What do you say Drake?”

The legion turned and looked at him. Drake fell to his knees--prostrating himself before Lou. “I agree father. That’s why I relinquish my assignment to Dameon. If he succeeds in destroying Sophia Miller, I will cede my rights to the throne. But that’s only if he’s valiant enough to accept the challenge.”

“I accept,” I said without hesitation.

“Then let it be so.”

“Dameon! Dameon! Dameon!” The legion chanted my name, and I didn’t stop them--although praise was reserved only for Lou.

They finally saw Drake for the coward that he was. With their support, I would have enough power to ascend to the throne. And after I brought them Sophia’s head on a stick, I would have enough power to overthrow Lou.
