Damaging Side Effect

Damaging Side Effect

A Poem by Lululagoon

Drugs are bad.

You pray that your child will not use them.
And if you find out they do
you feel betrayed
frustrated
angry

You yell at the child
scold them
punish them for the wrong that they have committed
to themselves

Drugs are bad.
so you stare at your child with squinted eyes
And talk through clenched teeth
Shunning remarks are discipline
As you shut the door when they cry
But later ask with a warming smile to open up
because you care during rare moments
That may not come till weeks on end
Its harsh but it makes sense since
your child is out of control
The troubled gets in trouble
No matter how helpless they may feel inside
they need a firm hand to let them know what they're doing is wrong
Since they must not already know
So you tell it to them
Yell it through them
Its harsh but its just one of the many consequences of getting high
If they can deal with the side effects of drugs
why not tough love
Make them feel bad about themselves and what they're doing
It will help I swear
As well as claiming your supportive
then constantly scolding them like they are now a sworn enemy
More negative energy will surely stop your child's addiction problems

Tell your child that you want to have an honest relationship with them
And that you really want to know where there at with their use
But still make it very clear that all drug use is forbidden and needs to stop immediately
Don't stop stressing the fact that they will be sent to rehab or to their grandmothers
Its very practical that your child will stop drugs cold as soon as you tell them not to
So don't worry about actually creating an open space where your child can really tell you what's going on
If your child persists
never be understanding towards their use
Because that of course shows them that you're okay with teen drug use

Drugs are bad.
Its the source of every problem in your household
So when you eliminate the substance
every conflict
every bitter complaint
every blues
and all uncertainties
Will disappear

You try your hardest to fix the problem
But your child is to withdrawn
Doesn't want to stop
Can't they see there hurting everyone around them
What amount of hurt could they possibly be feeling that would make them throw it all away
there just selfish
Keep yelling at them
Show your frustration
But no consideration of what they may be going through
Consideration towards them
means consideration towards drugs

Your child is in the other room
Smoking pot
Surprisingly enough all your punishments
aggressive threats
cold shoulders
shuns and screams
Did not stop your child's drug use dead in its track

Drugs are bad.
Which means your child has no right to be hurt about the coldness in your eyes
Or the disgust in your expressions
These again are all just consequences that they put upon themselves
After all why would they do drugs knowing the hostility that  comes with it
You can't help but feel angry
while witnessing their self destructive tendencies
They need to take responsibility for being unwanted

You know you want to help them
Or maybe helping is too difficult of a process for you right now
you just want to make it stop
But If you can't make them stop
If you can't help them
Shun them
Because that's the only choice left
right?
