The Fall of Icarus

The Fall of Icarus

A Poem by Hannah
"

Inspired by the Greek myth of Icarus and his fall, as well as the painting "The Fall of Icarus" by Pieter Bruegel.

"
Freedom
Once more in his sight.
Joy
Abounding as he takes off in flight
Folly
Led him to fly to the sun
Heat
Finished his waxen wings- done.
Limbs
Flailing through the air
Father
Being the only one who cared.
Farmer
Plowing his field of land.
Stops
Watches, slow as sand.
Sailors
Gape in awestruck shock
Sailing
Letting their ship leave the dock.
Splashes
Of water struck,
Hit
By the boy who lost his luck.
Birds
Continue to sing,
Bells
Go on and ring,
Working
Farmers continue plowing
Busy
Sailors keep on sailing.
Earth
Revolving still
All
Forgot the boy
They helped kill.

I almost gave this piece a miss, as the last thing the world needs is another Icarus poem...but this is quality stuff, with an interesting and effective rhyme scheme and an unusual use of form to provide a different look at the myth. This is very well-done work.
