Adolescence

Please—

Do not make an issue

over what I make of me.

I'm blazing a new path—

finding

new footholds,

practicing

what I know, and

learning

along the way.

I have not yet arrived—

I am

uncertain

of many things.

I don't know

What

I will encounter

I don't know yet,

My destination.

 

Of this,

I am certain:

 

I will manage better

Knowing you will

Help me up

When I fall

And that you'll be

Patient

While

I continue to find

My bearings.

Author's Note

Oddly enough, I was writing it to myself, while I was transitioning, and I felt so many expectations from so many people. Once it was completed, I realized it was indeed something that an adolescent would say to a parent...something I would have liked to have said so many years ago--hence the title.

I like the style and look of this. You can really hear the speaker in your head, which I think is good. And this would just be something wonderful written to a parent. Good job.
