Ancient Soup

Ancient Soup

A Poem by Lorraine Montez
"

Remembering soup kitchen runs with Chewbacca Terry at the community mental health gig, 2002.

"

“What’s up, Kid?”

And “How you been?”

He utters as they wander in.

“Things lookin’ up?

You comin’ along?”

He offers, like their favorite song.

The staggered, stable, solid truth

Indemnifies the rough, “uncouth”--

And squalid “clients” gathered there

Depend on him, to simply care.

                Wrapped peanut butter sandwiches,

Handed with a small milk carton,

                Received like Christmas presents

To squelch hunger, and to hearten….

It’s dingy business that they trade

A solemn, shady, dark charade.

Aleatory essence made,

While memory and meaning fade…

                In somber effort to evade,

While just the same, to validate

                Mutual purpose.

Written on a dreary, rainy Sunday, May 1st, 2016...looking back and remembering the sadness in their eyes.

(Can't seem to straighten out my photos, no matter how many rotations, or cut and pastes? They're straight when I copy them. Anybody know how to fix that?)

What an heartwarming piece of work... I admire people like you more than anyone else... I have served for a non profit organization once but they stopped it that same year... It was an amazing experience for me to see those "everything lost" people and kids, it's an experience that I will never forget... This is just so amazing and pleasing to my heart... I'm glad to meet you frnd... Many thank yous and respect towards you...
Sincerely
Dhiman

but you helped them and that is so important...a friendly face, a helping hand---a meal---letting them try to remember that they are still human beings.
