Inner RealmA Poem by Lorraine MontezAt times, the "spaces in our togetherness" are unintentionally too extreme. Elusive balance is the continual striving of the lovers' equation, so that it comes out whole.I did not mean to leave you so abandoned, When I retreated far inside my mind.
I did not intend for you to suffer isolation, When I sought the safe refuge of my solitary self, …apart from you, in your bed.
I did not wish to draw doubt or inflict harm, When I nurtured my own fears and fled from you, Figuratively… Absent, though you could feel the warmth of my proximity.
Those six small inches of mattress space I placed between us as I withdrew May as well have been the chasm of the Great Divide And I heard the perplexity of your voice in the darkness, innocently questioning “Why?”
But icily immersed in my own inner realm, I could not feel you, And no response was returned from me.
Thus, I abruptly introduced the anomaly of “separation” into our “togetherness” A place I inhabit frequently To which, you are unaccustomed.
So insulated, in my internal sojourn, Detached, out of fear, out of sync, I momentarily exposed you to the harsh wilderness of dejection. I know, that moment’s cold was chilling.
Lover, I am sorry, for I am flighty and precarious Easily frightened by my own imaginings, I know to go…within.
But that does not mean I wish to be without you.
