Before Something Happens

Before Something Happens

A Poem by Lorne Blaine

In the morning

you watch

videos

on Youtube

on your computer screen.

Later you grab a book

you're lazy, anxious,

it's past 12 and

you still haven't took

a shower.

You take a shower

you stay there

still drowsy

for 15 minutes

and then

you get out

still somewhat drowsy;

even water can't erase it

the drowsiness,

the drowsiness,

the drowsiness of the waking day

in the middle of the week.

That's how you feel most mornings

it's just a waking for something later

just a prelude before a story starts

or something starts,

but you go upstairs

or downstairs

you sit, you plug your computer,

and you start another video

and you're distracted

though, still, somewhere,

you can't see it, but somewhere

it's still there,

the feeling.

And, later, during

the time

you had thought being

the start of the story,

you look again,

and what you see

     is just another prelude,

              and you're still waiting.
