If The Shoe FitsA Poem by Leanne EstelleA part of a collection of fairytale poetry I'm working on.
She made me clean and scrub the floor
And when I was bad she locked my door I was stuck in that room 'til the mice heard my plea Until they could retrieve the key. When I was free I ran down the stairs I ignored my stepsisters' evil glares, I tried to stop the duke who was about to leave But my stepmother had a wicked trick up her sleeve. She thought "With this plan the trouble ceases." So she tripped the duke up and the shoe smashed to pieces! She thought that was it, that the battle was done But I smiled for I knew she had not yet won. I comforted the duke and said "Don't despair, For that was one shoe, half of a pair." I pulled out the other shoe from my pocket But my stepmother's temper began to rocket. She lunged forward trying to grab it out of my hand "Madam, I must try every girl in the land." The duke told her and took the shoe As he put it on my foot the trumpets blew. "It's a perfect fit, the prince will be pleased!" My stepmother lunged again but the duke had her seized. "The prince had me searching for you far and wide For - if you say 'yes' - you will be his bride. I nodded right away and was whisked to the palace Where I could live far away from the malice. It just goes to show that your dreams can come true; If it happened to a servant it could happen to you.
