Chapter 5

“You’re always thinking about escaping aren’t you? Always thinking about it… always dreaming about it…” -Unknown

I hug Ted to my chest in the backseat of the car, looking out the window. Gina offered me to take a seat shotgun, but I refused. I like the feeling of seating in the back of the car. It feels more spacious. I think of all the places she could be taking me-

“So you’re probably wondering where we’re going,” Gina says interrupting my thoughts. “So I guess I should tell you since we’re already on the road.”

I look over at her, and see that she is staring blankly at the road ahead of her. Her hands are clenched tight on the steering wheel.

I keep quiet over the long seconds of silence, even though I really want to beg her to just tell me. She lets out a sigh.

“I thought you should know, your mother and I were good friends.”

This surprises me. My mom knew her? Is that why she adopted me? I have no words so I keep silent. Gina takes that as her cue to continue.

“She would always talk about you, and how special you were. When she first had you, she kept telling me how extraordinary you were, and what you were going to be. I remember when she brought you over, so I could see you. Oh, Eve. You were just adorable…”

Watching her as she was speaking, I saw that tears started coming down her face, when I looked in the rear-view mirror. Her lip trembled and she fiercely wiped away at her tears with one hand, while steering with the other.

I didn’t know what to say. I was too busy trying to calm myself so I wouldn’t be reminded of the memory of her. I bit my lip so hard with effort not to cry, I started to taste blood. I held on to Ted tighter.

Finally Gina took a few deep breaths and her face was blank and calm again. “I think I might know who killed your mother.”

At that I whip my head, around and look at her stunned. “What?” I breathe out.

She nodded. “I think I know. She worked for the F.B.I, but she also told me what kind of work she did. She couldn’t tell me everything, but talked about the project that they were working on. She said it was important, and made me swear not to tell anyone else about the project. If she ever were to get into a situation, she asked me to protect the project for her.”

Okay, I was going to add this to me and Jean’s murder investigation. “Was she working for a company?”

“Yeah.”

“What was it called?”

“She said she was working for the CGS, Confidential Government Sciences. I’m sure you know well how much your mother loved science.”

I know it well. Then I frown. “Then do you have the project the company needs?”

Gina nods. “Yes. It’s with me now.”

I look around her, expecting a box or a science-looking thing. “Umm… where?”

We come to a red light, and Gina slows the car to a stop. She masages her temples as if she’s stressed out. “I don’t think you understand, Everest.”

She looks to me. “You are the project.”

The light turns green, and the car starts moving again.

“Wh-what?” I stutter. How come I didn’t know about this?

“I am taking you back to the company CGS. I’ve been thinking about it and found I can not keep stolen property. Especially property that belongs to the government.”

I am on the verge of a panic-attack. “Wait. No! Don’t take me there. Who told you I was the project? You can’t just drop me off and leave me there. You can’t abandon your child-”

“You are not my child. You are government property.” Gina’s hand clenched around the steering wheel.

I look out the window, and see a building. On the front of it, it has the letters C.G.S on it. This can’t be happening. She can’t be doing this. I think about jumping out of the car, but she must sense something because she locks the doors with a button upfront.

“I thought you and my mom were friends!” I accuse.

She parks the car. “We were,” She says evenly calm. “But I am loyal to company standards, unlike your mother.”

Wait… She works there? That’s how she and my mom met.

She takes off her seat belt. “One of the companies employee’s probably killed your mother. They don’t kill unless there is a serious reason, and your mother knew what her actions would lead to.”

Gina unlocks only her door and opens it. “I am sorry this had to be this way. I really did like your mother. But, I have to do this.”

She gets out of the car, and is coming around the other side. My heart is beating so fast in my chest, it hurts. Ted is still on my lap, and I am again reminded of my mother. Why? I think to Ted. Why does this have to happen to me?

The bunny stares at me with the same black, button, eyes he would always look at me with. The bunnies expression, did seem a bit sorrowful though…

The car door next to me is unlocked and opened. Gina stoops down a bit to reach my eyes.

“Okay, honey we can do this the hard way or the easy way.”

I don’t move.

“Get up and out of the car.”

I don’t move.

“Eve-”

I flip her off.

She sighs. When she moves to unbuckle my seatbelt, something flickers in me. I growl. Like an animal growl. Gina raises her eyebrows, then clicks off my seatbelt.

“Come on, Eve I don’t have time for this.” She moves to grab my arm, and I make a quick decision. I duck under her arm and jump out the car with Ted in my arms. I don’t look back, and run. I don’t know where I am going, I don’t know what else to do, I just run.

I hear Gina call out to me, but I ignore her. She could go to hell. But, maybe I should have listened to her when she called me, because a painful wave of shocking electricity causes Ted to escape my hands as I fall to the ground. I feel dizzy and confused. What happened?

I hear a low male voice.

“Thank you, Dr.Smith we will take it from here.”

I kept thinking to myself, Escape. Escape. Escape. I tried to move, but everyone of my muscles were clenched and refused to budge.

Footsteps echoed in my hearing giving me a headache. A face appeared before me, crouching down to look at me. “Don’t worry Eve, we are going to take good care of you.”

That was the last thing I remembered, before everything went black.
