There she stood...

There she stood...

A Story by Liban Jibril

There she stood.

It was approaching midnight.

She stood facing the fire, gazing into its depths occasionally looking up

He gazed with the intensity of a thousand suns, for the duration of 3 seconds,

Into her eyes, those greenish brown infinities, in which he could see himself lost.

The dignified structure of her face, regal almost, as if descended from royalty

He wouldn’t be surprised.

Her face was a mystery, waiting to be solved

Her face was the answer to the universe in locked form

He knew that she would unlock it, and that meaning would stream forth.

He felt like there was an ocean between them, two.

And he knew that if he drowned traversing it, he’d still be content.

And he stared with such vicious, honest, presence that she looked over at him

And as he looked away in modesty-

There he sat.

It was approaching midnight.

He sat talking to his friends and laughing amicably

She stared at his face and saw an open book, but knew there was more

In his face there was caution, amusement and curiosity, but

The look he had given her was one of reckless abandon, and unhindered questions

And she saw passion there, perhaps enough to match her own, and so her flames flared

For in his eyes, she saw the realization of this raw and tender attraction, and was almost seduced

By the imagining of the short, but sweet, lifetime of two matches which flare together

Dreams of a lifetime together with this girl he’s only seeing for the first time aside,

He thinks of speaking to her, of asking her who she is, of some hilarious line to make her laugh and make her comfortable, but nothing will do- nothing is good enough for a woman like her

She’s enamored by her own imagination, seeing love, marriage, and the end of existence at his side,

Should she go speak to him? What would make him laugh? He laughs so easily, what if I can’t make him laugh? I have to make light of the situation, I can’t let him know how badly I want him

He stands, and she sits, and they both wonder if the other meant something by it, and both wonder if they will be able to impart the extent of this unknowable, uncontainable attraction upon the other

She stands, and he sits, and now her brother is here to pick her up and now she’s got to go and now he’s leaving too and now she’s following her brother and when she turns back around

He’s gone. And so is she. And nothing was ever the same.
