Picture On The Wall

Picture On The Wall

A Poem by E.A. Standifer

There was a picture on the wall

Of a blue nightfall,

And a boat sitting over the water…

With a journal at its center,

That, I would imagine, one winter,

A great man had given his daughter.

And in my sweetest dreams,

She was a girl like me,

But with some amazing story to tell.

Living wild and free,

Moon-guided as the sea,

Leaving bits and pieces wherever they fell.

She needn’t a picture on a wall,

For adventure to call,

Or that boat floating nice in the water.

 She didn’t have to pretend

She didn’t want to fit in,

Or daydream that some great love had caught her.

But, alas, pictures wither

and imaginations splinter.

And, did the girl ever get on that boat?

I stopped so much pretending.

Used that time I was spending.

And she lived through the things that I wrote.
