To the Sunrise

To the Sunrise

Once as a little girl

I asked some one

what hope looked like.

They answered

a sunrise,

and I pictured it:

light pinks stolen from a blushing bride,

bright blues from newborn eyes that have never cried,

sunshine like smiles with nothing to hide.

In that moment,

I began to believe in hope.

Tonight,

I sat criss-cross applesauce

in the shadowless dew-touched grass,

waiting for the truth to hit me:

I have nothing more to wait for.

Tears forming like bruises on my arms,

I ached

for the little girl that was me

who never saw the flaw in her belief-

the crack in the ceiling that broke the sky in half

when the rain came.

Her faith was placed in the beautiful outcome of night,

day.

But did she ever imagine the night itself?

Did she search for beauty of the future

when amidst the star-enveloping fog?

My dreamt-of sunrise shatters:

wedding gown shredded,

children hardening into adults,

smiles torn by unspoken lies.

Hope is seeing the sun in the dark,

but I cannot even look to the east.

WOW, very well done. Outstanding last two lines; I'll give more review when I'm not so tired.
