CHAPTER ONE

CASSIE

The intercom squeaked loudly, waking me from a nap, “Cassie Lynn to the main hall.” I moaned as I got out of my cot and put on the little gray slippers that matched my jumper. I rang the buzzer on my door the hall clerk let me out.

“Do you really have to escort me to the main hall? It’s right at the corner. Where else am I gonna go?” I said to him. He was big and muscular. He had a hold of my arm, and the way his muscles flexed he looked like he was hurting me. But he was being as gentle as ever. When I got no answer I said sourly, “What, the silent treatment? Sorry if I degraded you, sir.”

He strengthened his grip after I finished my sentence. He gave me this glare that told me to shut my mouth. A*****e, I thought.

As we reached the main hall, I could see the front doors. Even out of the little windows on the, I could see outside. I wanted outside so bad. Freedom called for me like a mother calls for a lost child.

“Hello, young lady. You must be Cassie Lynn.” The voice scared me out of my day dream and I jumped. The muscular clerk tightened his grip some more.

“Yea, Cassie Lynn in the flesh. Who are you?” I asked in a sassy tone.

“I’m from the agency, miss.” he said. The agency was what everyone called the crime section of the psych ward. I was there before I came here. They had cells and guards, but everything was sort of padded and everyone had a doctor to look after them. My doctor told me I didn’t belong there because I wasn’t a special need criminal. And as much as I wished I was, I wasn’t. I’d rather be a nut case murder than a girl who knew full well what she had done.  But then again, I’d rather be with normal, juvenile, girls than nut cases who are out to kill everyone. That place got to me. If I would have had to stay there all this time, I would have belonged there in the end.

“Okay, they already told me I didn’t belong in your cells. What do you want from me now?”

“There are a few questions in your notes that go unanswered. And I’m here because they expect me to get them. I’m not just a clerk from the ward, Cassie. I’m an officer of the law.” he said in a proud voice. I knew the questions were ones I had refused to answer back at the ward. There were a few I couldn’t tell them until I talked to Sam. But he’s still in the agency, so I don’t know if I should just give it up now.

He took me into the rooms where they process us the day you get here. He told me his name was Officer Nicks and that I was ordered by a judge to answer the questions he gave me. Once we were settled into the room, he started in.

“I have your report right here. The one the arresting officer typed up. Read it for yourself. Tell me if it sounds right, miss.” He said as he placed the paper in front of me.

It read:

NAME: CASSANDRA ELISE LYNN

AGE: 15

TIME/DATE: 11:48PM of OCTOBER 19, 2006

DETAILS:

A DISTURBANCE WAS REPORTED FROM THE NEIGHBORS AT CASSANDRA’S HOME. ON ARRIVAL I NOTICED FLAMES COMING FROM THE KITCHEN AND CASSANDRA WATCHING THEM BURN THE STOVE AND FLOOR AROUND IT. SAMUEL FLETCHER WAS ON THE RUN FROM THE SCENE AND WAS PICKED UP AND QUESTIONED AS AN ACCOMPLICE TO THE CRIME COMMITED. AS WE TRIED TO EXTNGUISH THE FLAMES, CASSANDRA TRIED TO RUN BUT WAS STOPPED FOR FLEEING THE SCENE OF THE CRIME. ONCE THE FLAMES WERE OUT THE REMAINS OF A HUMAN WERE UNCOVERED UNDER THE ASHES. WHEN WE ASKED CASSANDRA WHY SHE TRIED TO RUN SHE SAID “I BURNED MY MOTHER IN THE STOVE.” WHEN THE REMAINS WERE EXAMINED, THEY WERE COMFIRMED TO BE HEATHER LYNN, HER MOTHER. AT FURTHER QUESTIONING CASSANDRA DENIED SAYING SUCH THINGS, AND DENIED HAVING REMEMBERED THE NIGHT IN QUESTION. FUTHER PSYCHIATRIC QUESTIONG REQUESTED.

“Yeah, sounds right to me. I just can’t believe it was him. He ordered me to be taken into care. What an idiot. I’m obviously in sound condition. I didn’t know they let mere officers make such big decisions.” I said as I threw the papers at him.

“It wasn’t just his choice, girl! It was the judge. And respect a uniform, sweetie. They put you in here!” he said, obviously angry. He wagged his finger at me and told me I was an ingrate and I deserved everything I got if I didn’t respect my superiors. He was making me mad and I think he knew it because he kept going.

“Well, it sounds to me like you don’t respect higher authority! Don’t run your mouth to me, girl, cause I’m one superior who won’t stand for it! Now isn’t that what got you in here? That’s why you don’t have a mother anymore! I am right, girl! Don’t you forget it!” he said as he stood up, hands on his hips. When he said that, it got to me. What does he know!? He sure as hell doesn’t know who I am. If did, he’d shut his mouth! I stood up and lashed back.

“My name isn’t girl. It’s Cassie! And you seriously don’t know why I killed my mom! You don’t get it at all! It had nothing to do with respect! Don’t come in here and yell at me like you know the whole story. All you have is the stupid report! I have the truth, so just shut up and ask me the damn questions!” I sat back down and put my head in my hands.

“Okay girl-I mean, Cassie. Now that we’re all good friends, I need to ask you why you lied to the police when they questioned you. I’m asking for the truth here, and I better get it.” he said. I sat back and sighed.

“The whole truth is, I don’t know. I just said I didn’t remember because I wasn’t ready to talk about it. I wanted to talk to Sam, but they wouldn’t let me. So I didn’t cooperate until I saw him.”  I told Officer Nicks. He wrote something down and asked again.

“Okay. Now why did you need to talk to Sam?”

I pointed my eyes at the ceiling and started to answer. “Because he’s considered my accomplice and I wanted to know what he told you guys. I wanted to know if he lied about anything. It wasn’t to make our stories match up, because I know that’s what you people think.”

“Okay Cassie. One last question here.” he paused and wrote something down. “Why did you kill your mother?”

I closed my eyes and prepared to explain it again. I hadn’t told anyone but myself why I did it. I didn’t know exactly how to explain it without Sam’s voice telling me what to say. So told him what I’ve been telling myself in my head for three whole years.

“She killed me.” I said.

He stared at me, disappointed.

“What did you just say?”

“I said she killed me. And she did.”

The only thing he said after that was goodbye. And he said it in a way that made me ashamed to have told him that without elaborating. But who really cares if he knows? It’s none of his business. There were a lot of cops like him trying to get a story out of me, but no one got one. That night, and frankly, my whole life wasn’t their business. Even if they begged for the truth, I don’t think I’ll ever tell anyone. As strange as it is, not even Sam.
