![]() Under attackA Story by Lauren..![]() Trying my hand at writing a fantasy piece it’s out of my comfort zone.![]() Bats are nobody’s best friend. They hide under staircases. The hotel maid found them in the closet when she found the mop. The bats made her spill the water. Her boss told her to take them far away from here. Bats were bad for business. The manager didn’t want to hear the customers complaining about bats in the sheets. The building had been home to multiple businesses. With each new business more bats were born to haunt the building. A vacant building comes with zero electricity bills. It took ten years for the building to be rented. It needed to look presentable. They put in new carpet. The old paint was peeling off. It had an old musty smell. How could a small business survive? Spiders were crawling under the countertops. A business doesn’t get any good reviews if it is poorly maintained. Holes were in the walls. It should’ve been a golf course instead of a hotel. People would park in front of the building and then decide to go someplace else. There was no estimated number of bats. The maid was cleaning the rooms and was dusting an askew picture when ten bats flew out from behind the photo. When she was cleaning the bathroom two bats were in the toilet and she wasn’t sure if they were dead or alive. They were alive alright. When she was removing vacuum cleaner bags twenty bats were stuck. Same thing. No one else was going to dispose of them so she collected as many as she could. After her shift she took a large cage to the river just beyond the hotel where she released them out into the wild. They flew around her for a while before they saw a castle in the distance. A castle would be a perfect fit for them and they wouldn’t be bothering the hotel anymore. The fear of being closed down forever was now gone. © 2025 Lauren.. |
