                                                              The Desk Clerk

Scene one

Amelia stands behind a wooden desk. She is working in the town library.

She is checking in books that people have returned when she notices her first customers.

Amelia: (beaming fondly) How may I help you?

Customer 1: Yes, I would like to return this book and get a Jane Austen book.

Amelia puts the book down in order to go get the new book.

Amelia is bent down looking for the book when she hears the sliding glass doors open and two more customers come in.

Amelia: (smiling fondly again) Be with you in just a moment.

Amelia goes back to the desk to help the next customers.

Customer 2: Excuse me. Can you please help me find a book on the wild

West and cowboys?

Amelia goes back to searching until customer  3 comes in.

Customer  3: Can you please tell where I can find the fantasy and science

fiction books?

Customer 1 grows impatient, begins tapping their feet.

Amelia: Sorry for the delay. I can’t be in two places at once.

Customer 1: I’ve been standing here for over ten minutes and I have things to

do today. You weren’t helping me so I won’t be checking out the

                                               book after all.

Amelia chases after the customer leaving the library.

Customer 2: I can’t believe this. All the books are checked out.

Amelia: I’m sorry.

Customer 2: I’m sorry, too.

Customer 2 exits the library.

Amelia lets out a long drawn out sigh.

Only one customer is left in the library.

Customer 3:   I don’t see the book that I’m looking for.

Amelia tries to put on a happy face to help hide the sad frown on her face.

Amelia: I may have made the other customers mad but it was their choice to leave. But I want to you happy and if that means getting the book from another library I’m happy to do that.

Customer 3:

(Beaming from ear to ear and smiling and holding out a hand for a handshake)

Oh, thanks!

Amelia: Business is just business and not everyone can wait but it’s all about conflict and resolution.

Customer 3: You don’t see examples of patience in the world today.

Amelia: I am so proud of you for using your words. How about coming next Thursday to pick up the book?

Customer 3: Sounds good. See you then!
