Your Very Own English Gentleman

Your Very Own English Gentleman

A Poem by Karina Longo
"

This is a lyrical poem inspired by the lyric-writing style of the 90s Britpop band Pulp.

"
He was certainly
Your very own typical english gentleman -
though he'd rather have a Starbucks grande latte
than Twinnings Earl Gray English tea.

She was an artsy girl from Berlin, Germany,
who loved to paint and scribble crazy stories.
Her clothes were all coloured in pink and silver -
She was the spitting image of beauty and brilliance.

The winter brought their souls closer together.
She has walking around the Hyde Park
while he was passing by looking for something
through the fog and s****y weather.

And when he saw her ginger hair bouncing
through the freezing killing air, let's say
Oh boy, he was so sure it would be
his lucky day.

When he approached her she thought he was
way too posh. But she smiled like a clever hippie,
they shook hands and she thought it was weird
to feel his velvet gloves instead of cold fresh skin.

"Would you mind to sit with me for a cup of coffee
or tea?"
He said. Those pale green eyes were charming enough
to convince her.
"I'd rather have some vodka or whisky",
That's what she said to him.

Oh yeah she was the kind of girl who'd want it burning
inside - some flames to leave the bad climate behind.
He was surprised yet obviously amused
And then they went to the pub to get some booze.

Oh, he really was your very own - english gentleman.
But after a couple of shots of whisky, oh well, who could blame him
he just wanted to impress her.
He started being loud and silly,
While she would be real cool with a drink or two.
She kissed his infantile lips and then she left the pub
But not without saying first
"Man, you're a handsome fool".

His head was spinning so fast, he couldn't even compare
with the spinning grace of London Eye.
He wouldn't even notice when she left, touching his own lips
Laughing and crying.
It was too good to be true
to such a man like with a lack of emotions in his life.

Too good to be truth indeed, my friend
even though it was a real kiss
She wasn't there anymore;
He was drunk and his restrained heart
was filled with regret and sorrow.

The girl met other man and they went
together to Berlin, Germany.
The english gent locked himself at home
for two weeks - or that's what the rumours spread.

He is certainly your very own - english gentleman
The kind of man every girl would want to get hold of.
Apart from the artsy one
Wearing a pink and silver kashmir coat.

Aww the poor English Gentleman.
What a wonderful little poem. It tells quite a cute story. It made me smile the whole time, but only because I was picturing a friend of mine who is also an 'english gentleman' and it reminded me of him. I agre with AmaNi I could definitely see this as a movie, or a short little silent film or something. It's just great. It has kind of an awkward flow, but I think that is part of the enjoyment of it, the awkwardness seems to fit with the story and the words very well.
And the story that could go with this poem would be fantastic, in fact...
