Chapter 3

 

“Amanda, how nice to see you” my mother said in her sickly sweet voice. Shaun gagged and I actually thought he was going to vomit. I looked from him to mom and back to him. We were all in the same room (minus dad) and there was no yelling, or screaming, or throwing of anything. We all sat in an awkward silence until Shaun stood up and came over kissed my forehead and left. He didn’t say a word, he just left. I looked at mom and she just shook her head. I gave her that look that said don’t you start anything and she just shook her head at me too. My jaw dropped.

“Get out.” I said sternly. She just looked at me.

“Excuse me?” she said with attitude oozing off of her.

“You heard me. Get out.” I said shortly. She rolled her eyes at me. I scoffed and pushed the call button for the nurse’s station.

“Now why would you do that?” She asked as she sat down and made herself comfortable.

“Because all you do is stress Shaun and I out. I don’t even know why I called you. You were never any help for me or Shaun.” She rolled her eyes. The nurse walked in and looked at mom then me then back at mom. She walked over and politely asked what I needed.

“I need you to escort this lady out so I can get some rest please” I said as politely as I could. My mom’s jaw dropped.

“You can’t call asking for help and then just kick me out!” She almost screeched.

“Watch me.” I said. The nurse looked back and forth between us confused. She then went over to my mom and politely asked her to leave and told her visiting hours would soon be over. My mom just sat there stunned. She then silently stood up and strode out. The nurse smiled at me and left turning the lights off as she exited. I turned on the TV as some type of noise. I rolled over to go to sleep when I heard the door creak open. I turned over to see Shaun trying to sneak in.

“Boo.” I said jokingly and he jumped slightly. I giggled and he just rolled his eyes.

“Very original Amanda” He said as he walked over to my bed. He sat down on the side of my bed and I sat up and faced him.

“So I saw you kicked mom out” He said quietly.

“I don’t even know why I called her.” I said almost in a whisper.

“You needed somebody besides dad and you thought that logically mom would be a good person because that’s what moms do.” He said in his all-knowing voice. I stifled a laugh.

“So that’s what they are for” I said still trying not to laugh. Shaun however was dying of laughter. I gave up and joined him in laughing. I heard the door creak open and I wiped the tears from my eyes and tried to compose myself. I saw the nurse peep her head around the corner.

“Everything alright in here?” She asked after she saw me wiping away more tears.

“Oh yes sorry my brother made a joke” I responded trying not to start laughing again. She slightly nodded, slowly turned around and left. As soon as we heard the door click close we started laughing all over again. Eventually we began to calm down. We were breathing roughly. My monitor started beeping and a nurse came in to check on me. She was the same nurse as earlier she just smiled and left. Shaun looked at me and his smile slowly disappeared.

“Seriously Amanda why did you call mom? You know what she did” His voice dropped to a hush whisper.

“I know Shaun. She got drunk every night, she abused us as kids, she left. I know. But that was the past didn’t you even have slight hope that she had slightly changed and that she could help? I mean hell were teenagers and I’m in the hospital our dad was taken out of here how are we going to pay the bills?” my voice rose to a higher volume with every passing second. Shaun just looked at me sorrow filled his face

“Nobody changes  that much Amanda. I wish she would be a real mother to us too but I know she isn’t.” He said slowly.

“I know. I just can’t give up hope. All I have ever wanted was a real mother.” I said a tear escaping and sliding slowly down my cheek. Shaun stared into my eyes.

“I know. You better get some rest Amanda. Tomorrow the doc wants to run some test.” He tucked me in and left the room. I slid down into the covers more and rolled on to my side and silently started crying before I fell asleep.
