The Traces We Leave Behind

The Traces We Leave Behind

A Poem by Eala Cartwright

The Traces We Leave Behind

You said that the thing you
Loved most about me was my laugh.
So tell me,
When you see those photographs of me now -
You know the ones -
Where someone has caught me
Completely unaware.
Mid sentence,
Mid laugh,
When I am exactly as you always
Said you liked me best.
So tell me,
Do you remember all of the times
I laughed at your daft jokes?
The way my laugh sounded
How you said it made you
Want to join in no matter what.
Do you remember?
And do you maybe get a little sad
At the realisation
That it's been weeks since my laugh
Last echoed through your life
Because when I think of the way
Your eyes would light up
As you smiled.
Watching me, always watching me.
That is the only thing I can think.
I miss you.
