Distance

Distance

A Poem by Eala Cartwright

Distance

If I didn't live where I live,
My love,
If there wasn't two hours
Worth of distance
Between us,
Then I would have stayed.
I would've stayed
And been the girl
Front row
At every one of your gigs,

The one that you
Called "baby",
That brings you coffee
On breaks at work
And holds you when it
All becomes too much.
I'd have met your mother,
Your sister & your father,
Been the one
That you wrote songs about.

There was such
Great potential
In what we shared
That week in early Feb,
My love,
And if distance wasn't an object -

But it is.
I live in a town that is
A stones throw
From an ocean
That reminds me of your eyes.
While you live
In a city of history and culture
That reminds you of the way
My eyes lit up
When I first saw it's beauty.

For a week my life
Was perfect.
I told you I stopped believing
In god the same time
I stopped believing in
Santa Clause and happily-ever-afters,
But for the short time
In which our forever resides
I am convinced
That you showed me heaven

Eala Cartwright
for the ones who distance fucked

-update!
In the year and a half since this poem was published, I have been the girl sat front row at multiple of his gigs; he doesn't call me 'baby', he favors the likes of 'love' and 'darling' instead; I have taken him coffee once, but I do regularly keep him company at work; I met his cousin first, his father next and his mother and sister last; and he has indeed written songs about me, as I have about him. We're not 'together', not officially, and up until 1 week ago we still lived in different towns. But there is an unspoken bond between us that distance was, in fact, unable to break.
