The Fact of Moving OnA Poem by Eala CartwrightThe Fact of Moving On I
think that was the thing that terrified her the most. She loved him hopelessly
and yet, she knew that she couldn’t
stay with him forever. Not in the way that he meant it. And she knew as well as
anyone how easy it was to forget someone. No one meant to, of course, but time
moves on and you have to move on with it. She knew that he would, in turn do
the same And that one day, maybe not so far from now as she hoped " One day, he
wouldn’t even think to mention her name. She would be a forgotten face in
photographs And hers would become a room that he never entered any more " That he barely even gave a second glance too when he passed. And equally she knew
that if it wasn’t death that separated them, But some other force of the
universe, Then she too would move on. She wouldn’t want to, Would put up one
hell of a fight, But those things were inevitable. She would have no choice
because what kind of a life was one half lived? And while she was sure that she
would always love him; One day he would simply be a name that she said with
slight longing When telling her children the stories of her adventures, A name
that her husband would ban in the house Because of the way she said it like a
prayer, Or the way her head snapped around when ever anyone else said it As if
she still, After all of that time Was expecting him to show up. That was what
terrified her. It wasn’t the actual act of dying or leaving him " It was being forgotten by him and maybe even forgetting him in turn.
