![]() The Lasting EffectsA Poem by Eala Cartwright The Lasting Effects “Love is not supposed to last” she said simply, no emotion in her voice to suggest that what she was saying pained her in any way, “The very nature of humanity dictates as such. We are temporary creatures, are we not? And love…love is no different. In the end, it just leaves you cold.” “Oh but you are so, so wrong!” he responded, reaching out and gently lifting her chin, “Love is the only thing that surpasses time. It is the one eternal thing in this world: In the end, it breaks your heart, sure, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. If it can be broken then it means that it still works. And isn’t that better? I would rather a broken heart than no heart at all.”
“You have never had your heart broken then, I take it.” she reflected, no longer concerned with the prospect of coming across patronizing, “I…Have you?” he asked, she went very still then, very quiet, “The feelings; they surpass time. They surpass time, and space, and death, and life. I knew a man once…his name was " well, it doesn’t matter what his name was. But our love... I thought it was enough, would be enough to get through anything. It wasn't. Love is not supposed to last " the universe just isn’t that kind.” © 2017 Eala CartwrightAuthor's Note
