Seen And Not Heard

Seen And Not Heard

A Poem by Elena Damjanovic
"

Based on life experiences..

"
Her little cherub face sullen,
Chocolate brown eyes solemn,

With great sadness and despair,
Her round face and rosy, chubby cheeks,

With spring like curls, in her soft,
Dark brown hair,

She was taught to be seen and not heard,
And had mastered such an obedience,

Like an art form,
By the time she entered toddler-hood,
And so it should remain for many years to come.

i was told this often as a kid...and it had its affect. I grew up feeling that what i had to say was unimportant and that more than a couple sentences and i would lose people's interest fast.
Not much self-confidence stems from this kind of upbringing. We are made to feel we should be just scenery...i can relate...took a long time to gain confidence...

I like this kind of poetry, simple like me but not too. I always wonder if the poem is a life experience or imagination. Or maybe even a little of both. Neat to read an author so far away. Thanks

Don't you just love adults?
Hopefully, in years to come, she'll pick the worse old folks home to put them in.

You describe what today would be bordering on 'child abuse' in a sensitive and sympathetic voice and description, which sets the images for the reader of an innocent waif deprived of love and affection.

It is child abuse, emotional and neglect, sadly.
Yes – a very interesting write! You have poetically touched upon a subject which should be addressed in our modern times. Being told to be silent is not the answer, only a means of control. If we are to challenge a culture of abuse, we must listen to our children. We must also create a society where all are listened to, regardless of gender, class or race. Only then might such systematic abuses become a thing of the past. Great share my friend – only those who have felt the issue can relate such words – bless... :-)
