Night Rivers

Night Rivers

A Chapter by Little Lotus

It was dream like, perhaps.

I never knew how many stars were in the sky before. It's not as if I live in a light-polluted area, in some massive city filled with throbbing human life. No, just some rural town that grows a little bigger year by year, still country enough to still feel comfortable, with kids playing until dusk in the streets and the old on their porches, watching the days slip by.

And, yes, my eyes have been bad, for a long time now. I've got problems seeing the distance of seven feet, much less a hundred-million specks of light in the milky black above. So I popped one contact in tonight and wandered out at around 1am and looked up. I didn't expect to see stars- it had rained and thundered and lightninged on and off all afternoon, though it had left me the boon of a rainbow earlier in the day.

But lo and behold, there were stars, and as I squinted I became irked at the blurs around the stars. Like pale rivers in the sky. I went back inside to put in my other lens, and when I came out again I found the phenomena wasn't the fault of my weak eyes, but that there were literal rivers in the sky of stars. Hundreds upon hundreds of stars. More than I'd ever seen in my entire life.

I drew up my circle, I danced, and I lay upon my driveway. The energy I drew up felt real and significant. I felt like the person I knew I could be.

That seems more right. I was shy, and I told her i was her's. I dragged my finger along a marble pillar, and hid myself from her view. In silence, she came around to me, her hand on the pillar, the same smile on her lips. She brought me to her chest. And she was cool, and she smelled of the ocean at night. Pure and cool. She knew, and she accepted me.

She took me into the entrance, and the hall was grand, and mirrored, and it felt as if it had a roof but didn't...
