The White Corridor

The White Corridor

A Poem by Beth Lindsay

Sirens roar,

peers turn their heads in confusion

no one knew what was in store

A woman in white ushered us away

into a hall of pure white for us to stay

I turned my head to the world that cried

I continued to walk into the room and sighed

My sister stayed close in fear of losing me

She and everyone was terrified, as they ought to be

There were only children in this hall

Teens like us and babies who couldn't even crawl

There were doors that lead to the unknown

The lady in white said, “do not wander off alone.”

As we sat in that hallway completely in white

What my sister said gave me the ultimate fright

“What is going to happen to us? What is going on?

Those sirens just now. . .was there a bomb?”

My heart just stopped and my emotions became still

The words that came out of my mouth was enough to kill

“Everything is alright. We will wake up tomorrow, you will see.”

I couldn't tell if those words were for her, or for me

I felt completely dead, knowing those words were a lie

I accepted our tragic fate and I could not cry

I felt completely dead and my heart knew why

we wouldn't wake up, because we have already

or surely will die.
