Re-PiecingA Story by Lily AllisonJust a little something. (:The girl sat on her floor, her eyes shut, overwhelmed by the feeling of abandonment. The truth that she had tried so long to deny was finally beginning to sink in. She always knew, deep down inside, that this day would come: the day he decided that she no longer mattered. Thinking about him not being a part of her life anymore left her feeling utterly broken. The decline of their friendship wasn’t sudden, by any means; it was agonizingly slow, torturous even. Right from the start, she knew it had been too good to be true, but she held on. Every late-night phone call, every text goodnight, every‘I miss you’, she clutched onto. Her head held high, she firmly believed that she could be different, that she wasn’t just another girl for him, that the phone calls until 2 am really mattered to him. The secrets they shared, the endless laughs….. she thought for so long that those were the moments that wouldn’t end. She was lying to herself. It had always seemed so easy with him; sharing their past, their dreams for the future, what they loved, what they hated. Their conversations went on for hours, ending only when droopy eyes and deep yawns overtook them. As the talks became less frequent, she began to miss him more. She missed their conversations, yes, but she also longed to see him in person again. Every month apart made her realize how much she loved his disheveled hair, his big, tender hands, and his sensitive smile. She yearned to be enveloped in his arms again, to feel so safe and secure. Her favorite part about him though, beyond all the others, were his icy blue eyes. They shimmered with joy, but hidden behind them was a past of pain and sorrow. He had shared with her the brutally hopeless details of his past, how he overcame them, but how sometimes he couldn’t help but go back. He was known for his smile, but things weren’t always that way for him. She wanted to gaze into the depths of those eyes again more than anything in the world, but as their friendship slowly dwindled, it became clear to her that those eyes may never lock with hers again. Their talks lessened as their schedules became busier. They made efforts to talk and to eventually meet again, but time and distance made it difficult. Eventually their contact ended completely. She texted him on numerous occasions, only to be met with no reply. At first she took it alright, assuming it was his schedule taking over, but it soon became apparent to her that they hadn’t spoken for three months. She realized that her attempts at contacting him were hopeless. The pieces of their friendship were left shattered all around her, and she realized that she had expected this all along: that the wondrous boy she had loved for a year had finally moved on. She was left with no choice but to continue onward, with nothing but the memories of them together to keep her alive. With that fact forever on her mind, she rose from her spot on the floor, and began to re-piece her life without him. © 2012 Lily AllisonReviews
