Describing Anxiety

Describing Anxiety

A Poem by L. Aericko

Imagine you're running,

Maybe you're playing some sport or training for that marathon.

Imagine that feeling.

Shortness of breath,

Erratic heart beat,

Stiff and strained muscles.

Imagine now those feelings but you're not moving.

Those endorphins that were released and made you happy aren't there,

There's no runner's high here.

Imagine you can't breathe.

Your heart is beating a mile a minute and you can't seem to see straight.

There's a tightness in your chest and a pit in your stomach that just

Won't

Go

Away

Imagine feeling thousands of eyes watching you,

Making you feel dread.

You are the prey of a nonexistent predator.

Your mind and body will work against you every second of your life.

You will think you're in a nightmare.

This is what anxiety feels like.

This is what Hell feels like.

And I want to wake up.

Imagine, indeed. Just reading it made me want another glass of wine. I hope you're taking medication.

I unfortunately am not. As much as I would like to, I can't afford it. Someday hopefully.
