Prologue

A Chapter by Meradee

It all started back in the twenty-first century. America was everywhere in the Middle East, trying to establish peace. Or at least that's what they said. Then several years later something happened that started the downward spiral. The stock market started to fail. The banks started to fail and the government bailed out Wall Street. For eight years, under America's forty-fourth president, things started to even out a little more, it got better.

One thing we ask ourselves now, here in the future, is where they got this money. The government doesn't have that fabled source of money. Then companies began to crash. Major corperations such as Target, Macy's, Dell, GE, Coca-Cola, even the airports, crashed and declared bankruptcy. This was a huge blow to the economy.  But then things decreased even more after that.

The government refused to bail out the motor companies a second time and they were shut down. All the car repair places closed due to lack of customers. Over the course of a hundred years the economy of the world had deteriorated into nothing. People were without jobs, there was no money for people to go to college and soon the colleges were closing. The world was suffering more then it ever had before. People were revolting and the suicide rate increased.

Around twenty-one hundred a dark age began. People stayed in their small towns, rarely ever venturing out. Languages were lost, dialects changed, a new age was beginning. Eventually groups formed with like ideas and soon government and countries no longer existed. It was just sects of people living in different areas.

These sects did not get along with each other. By the middle of the twenty-first century contention was high between those who's ancestors had once been allies. Soon some of these peoples began to dissapear, whether by death or by embracing another sect. The cultures of the old world began to dissapear even more rapidly.

By the twenty-fourth century the idea of government no longer existed. Anarchy ruled the minds and hearts of the people. Living in the world was no longer a pleasant thing. For the strongest prevailed and the weak cowered. A concept that had not been recognized for many years began to take place. Darwinism, the weak were weeded out and the strong given more abilities. Life would never go back to the way it had been all those years ago.

In the early twenty-fifth century a man by the name of Adahy Remkin had had enough of the world and was determined to change it. And that he did. He created an empire spanning the entire world. With help of people who were also tired of the way the world was he managed to become successful in prevailing over all the former nations. In twelve years he was seated at the new capitol of the Remkin Empire. Rochetol was then the largest city in the world. People flocked to it, hoping to get in good with the new Emperor. All hoped that life would be better.

And life did get better. For the rest of Adahy's reign the world managed to get back up on it's feet. He reunited everyone. It didn't matter if they were across oceans, across mountains, or even in the deepest recesses of the world. His methods weren't 'peaceful', though. Because of this many didn't like him. He ruled by fear, just like those who had maintained control during the anarchy years. Only he had a lot of power.

Three short years after Adahy came into power a man named Valin Othello created a large rebellion. They never really did much damage but eventually they did draw some more support. They call themselves, "Othello Rebels". His legacy has lived on for centuries. Now in the twenty seventh century, six hundred years after the decrease of the economy and civilization life is better then it was back then, with modifications.

We don't have cars, or any type of machinery that causes pollution. We figured it out this time around, and we aren't going to let our world decrease back to that again. Othello Rebels now cover the entire planet causing problems as much as possible. They are a major problem for the Remkin's who still rule the empire. At every twist and turn they try to get rid of them, but it's just like trying to kill rats. When you kill one, twenty more appear.

The rebels have good reason to revolt. They are the brave ones who don't like to be told what they are allowed to do, and what they aren't allowed to do. They don't like the curfew, the discrimination of races, and backgrounds. Even though the Remkin's say they want peace they treat those that aren't as 'good' as them like dirt. Similar to the early racism and such of the world.

As history has told us, a change is bound to come. The Remkin's fear that the rebels will finally overturn them. The river rats, as they refer to the rebels, are increasing in number and their technology is also increasing. In the Remkin's minds they must put an end to this evil. But then the rebels believe that they must put an end to the evil that is ruling the empire. They want the old ways back, the ways that no one remembers.

So here our story begins, in the year two thousand six hundred and ten, about three days from Rochetol. Where the heir to the Remkin Empire is traveling through deep rebel country.
