The Fox and the RabbitA Poem by Lillian Kirsch"Some thoughts on trust and wondering if everyone else is a hungry fox."The fox whispers to the rabbit In a voice lean and keen “Fear not dear beauty, my teeth are meant only to adore.” The rabbit whispers back to the fox In a voice shaky and low “How can I love what I do not know?” The fox eats the rabbit but loves the bones The rabbit peaks open it’s eyes And there the fox is again Teeth smeared with the blood of a memory The rabbit does not remember where the blood came from The fox does The fox knows what it’s doing The fox whispers to the rabbit In a voice sweet and heavy “I love you” The rabbit whispers back to the fox In a voice soft and foolish “I love you too.” The fox eats the rabbit but loves it’s newfound luck Love is a God damn fox To which I mean to say I am the rabbit I know There are dangerous things out there But the thought that I am not loved I cannot bare So I walk right up to the fox And I speak first “Show me your teeth” There’s comfort in knowing love could kill me Knowing it would not be myself The rabbit walks into the mouth of the fox because it loves her The fox eats it’s last meal but loves the rabbit © 2022 Lillian KirschReviews
