-Chloe-
“No Rebah,” I said for the millionth time, “I will not date your cousin!” I pulled my brown curls into a thing resembling a pony tail as we sat at the nearest patio table available.
“Oh come on Chloe, it’s not like he’s horribly unattractive or anything.” She said as she tossed her perfect platinum blonde hair over her shoulder. Rebekah Silver has been my best friend since we were seven years old. I am now seriously questioning my ability to make friends.
“It’s got nothing to do with looks. I need to focus on colleges, making plans for next year…” I was cut off by a very dramatic, very loud, groan.
“It’s the first day of summer! We’re going to be seniors, why waste the best days of your life on organizing and lists?” Rebekah reached forward and knocked my thick blue planner off the café table we were currently occupying. Scowling I bent and scooped it up.
“Because I plan on getting into a good college,” I replied while brushing off the leather cover of what was my life in paper, “and keeping those days of mine nice and full with a good job so I can enjoy life.”
Rebah dropped the paper coffee cup she had been drinking from in a nearby wastebasket and raised an eyebrow above her dark rimmed sunglasses.
“For real Chloe. We’re seventeen. Get over it.” I shook my head and stood to being walking toward the car, Rebah following close behind still chattering though I was no longer listening. We had just been released from our last day of junior year an hour before, luckily Starbucks is conveniently located down the road from our high school.
“You need to lighten up girl,” I caught the blonde saying as she stepped off the curb to her car. “Find a guy. Get a kiss or two. Learn to relax.” I rolled my eyes and waved goodbye as I opened the door of my SUV and climbed in.
“I’ve still got my cousins number!” Laughing I started the engine and began to drive the short distance to my house. Rebah has this crazy idea that all my problems would be solved if I got a boyfriend, apparently a relationship isn’t even necessary, just a kiss and a guy to be with is the remedy to all of life’s woes. I didn’t understand her logic, guys fall in line for her so it isn’t difficult on her part, I however am not Rebekah. My unruly brown hair has a curl and a frizz that no flat iron could control, green eyes are supposed to be something like emeralds or a beautiful gem… mine are more along the lines of an old pond. Nowhere near perfect, and not striving to be. I was fine with exactly the person I had turned into and I did not intend to create a façade for the joy of the world. Besides that I had college coming up, I needed to stay focused to keep myself on track for a good life.
Satisified with my choices I slowed my car to a stop as I came to my house. The familiar forest green siding comforted me, even as the dingy shrubs that lined our front walk drooped in the summer sun. It was interesting how small things made people feel better. However my simple reverie was interrupted by a brunette boy running from the house.
“Chloe! Chloe! Chloe! I have a major crisis!” My younger brother Jeremy planted both hands firmly on the window frame of my car cutting off my only exit… though I could just climb over the partition and use the passenger…
“Chloe are you even listening!?” I blinked refocusing on the brown eyes staring me down.
“Sorry, repeat that one more time?”
“I said,” he reiterated with an exhasperated tone, “I told both Lindsey and Marissa I would go out on a date with them tonight. Both of them. One night. Two girls. Major issue.”
I shook my head. “Move or I slam my door into your knees.”
“Chloe!” I popped the door open. He moved. “Would you please help me?” Jeremy distorted his face into a sad, big eyed mess. A mess that always worked to make me do what he wanted. Getting out of the car I walked to the house while reprimanding my brother for being a fifteen year old Casanova.
“However, if you don’t want to risk either of them talking go with one and tell David to help you out. He’ll bring a dozen roses and a note from you that says you couldn’t make it due to a family emergency but you hope this temporary replacement will suffice in his ability to pay for a meal and a movie. Send sincere apologies blah blah blah, she’ll think it’s charming and you’ll be off the hook.”
“You’re an angel!” His brown eyes were wide with teenage appreciation.
“If it happens again I will personally call the girls and tell them how much of a player you are.” He saluted a mock sergeant and bolted for his room to call David.
Dropping my purse I brushed stray curls out of my eyes before heading up to my room and opening my laptop.
