Seeing in the Dark

Seeing in the Dark

A Poem by Michael Adams
"

What you see in the dark isn't really as it appears

"
I only know a few things
about this place.
One,
your here.
Somewhere.
your voice echoes and drifts,
Laughter can be heard
alongside tears.
And I'd like to comfort you
but that brings me to the
Next things I know about this place.
It's dark.
And no matter how far I extend
my arms.
They'll never find themselves
wrapped around you.
Be it because you've been here so long
your eyes have adjusted to the dark
and you see my approach
just ready to dodge.
Or, maybe, that it is so dark
I couldn't possibly find you.
And no matter how desperately I search
we'll never run into each other.
And, according to you,
I entered this world in vain,
because even if I found you
I wouldn't like what I discovered,
Because you did some bad things
when you were younger,
things that make you think
would make me hate you.
Which makes me think even more
that your eyes must have adjusted to
the dark,
and that you are dodging
My outstretched heart.
But you need to understand,
that even though you can see
in the dark,

You're seeing in the dark,

And everything you see is lackluster.
That mirror you've been looking in,
criticizing the figure looking back at you,
is literally just a Shadow of
who you Really are.
A shadow that,
in this room with no light,
can exist in all places at once.
And you,
being surrounded by your shadow,
have grown so familiar with it
that your eyes have adjusted
and you
have accepted this room as truth.
And I plead for you to turn on a light,
and realize
it isn't your shadow,
your past, who you think you are,
that defines who you are.
But rather you,
your current actions, the present,
that defines the contours
of your shadow.
More importantly,
if you would turn on a light,
this darkness would disappear entirely.
Your shadow,
would suddenly be much smaller
then it is now.
That this thing
you claim I don't want to discover
would mean so little when in contrast
to the beautiful
You.
