Madeline stood in front of the full length mirror hugging her belly.
“You’re so fat, no point in trying to hide it.” Said the mirror. Madeline stood there and sucked her tummy in, “That’s it, now if only you were that skinny and still could breath. It would be great.” She sighed as she exhaled her breath and watched her tummy inflate back to its normal size.
“It’s not fair” she muttered as she grabbed her coat and bag and headed to school. She caught the bus and went to the back and sat on her own, she saw her reflection in the window,
“And what ARE you thinking with your hair, I can easily say ... hideous! Maybe that’s why there is an empty seat next to you.” she ran her fingers through her hair and tried to flatten it, “Remember, no food. You already look like a hippo. And with the school lunches...You will easily become an elephant.” Madeline nodded to herself and avoided her reflection in the window for the rest of the way to school.
When the bus stopped she got off and started her day as she always did. Hating how she looked.
Everyone was saying how skinny she was, and how they were all starting to worry about her. She simply said she was fine and went off to the bathroom.
“Well, they have no idea what there talking about. Skinny. You! HaHa! That’s a laugh!” tears were welling up in her eyes. “And you have gym next.”
“What’s wrong with that? I’m going to be burning fat aren’t I...?” Madeline thought.
“Nope. You’re going to be sweating your makeup off and you shall look like a big fat sweaty pig with your makeup dripping down your face.”
“Oh no.” It came out in an almost whisper.
“Mind you, your gym clothes are betting looking than that shirt you’re wearing today. Not one would wear that even if they were paid!” Madeline sensed the mirror laughing at her reflection.
She walked closer the mirror and stared at herself
“Don’t come to close! You will break me!” the mirror was defiantly laughing now. Madeline looked at her skinny arms and her pale dried out skin. A smile grew on her face.
“You are smiling. At what, how I’m right? How you look like you have eaten 100 cakes today? What HAVE you eaten today?”
“Nothing!” She shouted in her head, “Now then, I am off to go and do gym.”
“Fine then sweaty hippo. Don’t go looking to ugly, if that’s possible.” Madeline laughed and looked at her reflection one last time, she had a plan. And it was all thanks to the mirror.
She ended up skipping gym. Just in case the mirror was right. It wasn’t long before the bell rang for the end of the day, she decide to walk home. It was a pretty long walk, but she wanted the fresh air.
When she got home she wasn’t surprised when her mother wasn’t there. She would still be at work.
Madeline opened up the garage door and looked around, her dad had a baseball bat around here somewhere... after a good search she found it, she went to her bedroom and dropped her bag on her bed and she stood in front of the full length mirror.
“I told you not to do gym. You listened to me... but I don’t like the way you have a baseball bat... what are you doing?”
“You told me today, not to come to close. Because you might break. Well, that’s what I’m going to do. I am going to push you away and break you.”
“And then what? Live your life as an obese hippo. I dare you, break me!” and with that Madeline swung the bat and hit the mirror, glass smashed into a thousand pieces all over the floor. the biggest smile spread across her face, she cleaned all the glass up and had a slice of cold pizza that was left from a dinner she didn’t eat last night, she couldn’t help but “Mmmm” out loud. It was the best thing ever, and her rumbling belly was surely saying thanks. The rest of the night she was so happy, she couldn’t remember the last time she was this happy.
The next morning she woke up with a smile too. She got changed into what she wanted to wear and not what others wanted to see her in. And did her hair the way she wanted to wear it. Her mother was so surprised when she sat down and had breakfast. She grabbed her bag and got on the bus. She took her usual seat at the back. She looked at her refection in the window.
“Looking pretty today.”
Madeline smiled and muttered “I know, I know.”
