Wanting What You Can't Have

The wind was blowing as the sun was ending its journey. The time was now or never. She gathered up her skirts and started towards the lake. What was awaiting her at the lake was none other than him. He was splayed in the grass without a care in the world.

I wish I could be like that she thought. Without hesitation she went to him.

"I knew you would come for me," he whispered.

She knew she had to do this; and do it she did. "Will you answer my question this time?"

"Yes, indeed. Your answer is no. Before you-"

Without any hesitation, she slapped him in his face. Crying, she questioned him, "Why?! Why won't you admit you love me and I love you?! It is very simple!"

He slowly got to his knees and spoke what was on his mind. "Darn you woman! I do love you! I could never fool you, my only love. My answer will remain the same, for I cannot give you what you need. I am only a man with little pay and a big heart. No woman should want a man like me."

Angered, she hit him again, and again, and again. "Why must you think that way?! I love only you! It doesn't matter to me whether you have money or not!"

They remained like that until the stars were bright in the night sky. He loved her. She loved him. They wanted what was forbidden. They both knew that they'd die with longing in their heart. And die is what they did.
