The Color of Fireworks

I wrote this because the 4th of July is coming up, hope you enjoy!

The Color of Fireworks

Every year I go out to see

The fireworks on the fourth of July

Bursts of color and imagination

Always fill my mind

 

First a small red to start

Captures the crowd's "oohs" and "ahhs"

Before moving to elaborate parts

 

A navy blue with a pinch of gold

Looks like a pirate ship at sea

Floating on the winds with the night stars

Their compass pointed towards treasure's greed

 

A huge green spark erupts to hug the entire sky

All I can picture are your piercing, emerald eyes

Peering down at my makeshift campsite

 

Now the explosions light off all at once

Like it's the next World War

Ashes rain down to make me cough

But I only want more

 

Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple

A rainbow caught on fire

Is in our sky so dire

To see the next design

It feels like the night is mine

 

Radio blasting, fireworks smashing

Together into works of art

Like a painter's palette

In the sky but never too far

Out of reach from us

 

Now the finale's finally here

Much to everyone's excitement and cheer

Colors light off like giant paint bombs

Splattering the sky, us, and then some

 

The last one goes off and gets a standing ovation

Entertaining as always, I can't wait for next year's

Bigger, brighter, and louder participation

 

Now as I pack up the tent and the chairs

I think to myself I could write a poem about that

But the thought always seems to flit from my mind

Just like a firework, gone in a flash
