I just want to be

I just want to be

A Poem by Li

I want my eyes to see as far as they can
I want my mind to imagine as wild as it can
I want to soar as high as I can
I just want to be,
I want to go as far as I can.

But honey, I see you torn...
You say you're proud of me,
You say you support me,
But I see that you are torn,
I see that you are not happy for me,
No, not really.

Must I stop here then,
Should I not fly further then,
Should I stop dreaming then,
Because I don't want to lose you,
Must I stop discovering me then.

Your behaviour is tormenting me,
I wanted you to be happy, for me, for us
Why must I choose between you and me,
I just wanted to fly, I just wanted to be
Should I stop here then?
For the sake of you, though certainly not for me.

Author's Note

Li
When a woman in a relationship becomes successful, it can cause a strain in a relationship when the guy can't handle her success. This can lead the woman to have to choose between her love and her success. I tried to depict that feeling in this poem today as it is also an international women's day. What do you think?

I do not think your complete authors note is necessary becuz the meaning of your poem is very clear. I like to put my poems out there & let the reader take it wherever it goes for them, rather than doing too much explaining in authors notes. This is just a preference not a rule. I agree that things often go like you say in this poem & it's not just about career success. If a woman uses words that a man does not understand (being more articulate) -- this also causes men to be scornful. The one line in your poem that causes me the most concern: "I wanted you to be happy, for me, for us" -- in my 64 years of life, I have come to understand that this is the stupidest desire one can have. People are ALWAYS not happy for us for MANY different reasons, all the way thru life. The sooner a person can stop hoping or waiting or redesigning their lives around this, the better life will be. It's liberating to the other person, too . . . we can't expect other people to love the things we love. That's too demanding. That's too clone-like. Sometimes the best we can do is to simply respect another person's right to go in a different direction than what we might want and if we can only do this in a bit of a sullen way, then true love honors that. Sorry for lecturing. Your poem says it like most people live it, very realistically & powerfully (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie
