Only a Stitched Up SmileA Poem by Li YanA poem about the expectations people have of you, and the feeling where you're compelled to reach those expectations to the extent that you lose your sense of identity.A girl skips proudly and jolly Her heart leaping a thousand miles Where shall she go, Oh where shall she go "Somewhere no one knows" She says, though her voice shakes with fear But no darling, You've no right to be afraid It's your duty to smile, like icing on a cake So we'll stitch your lips up with a very thin needle But fear not, fear not! It won't hurt at all You use it everyday, on your clothes and rags Wear a dainty elegant dress and be The princess of your time We're all depending on you to do everything right Don't trip, don't fall, use the right spoon Always keep your mask on or else you shall lose And when you're finally alone You may look in a mirror and gasp at the sight of a faceless figure There's nothing but a stitched up smile that never falters And a knife in your hand to be pierced into your chest For what is the purpose of all the jewels and glamour You have ceased to exist centuries ago And yet you still remain the same, and all alone There's no escape for your doom has yet to come Even if you run We'll find you, We'll find you Your friends whom you trusted with your soul They too have abandoned you Your home has been burnt to ashes Your memories no longer your own Even if you dream of running In your dreams We'll find you, We'll find you © 2017 Li YanAuthor's Note
