Innocence

Innocence

A Poem by Shiika
"

I wrote this poem while thinking about my nephew one day. The poem pretty much explains my thoughts. Sorry in advance if it depresses anyone.

"

I look at my nephew (he’s four you know)

I can’t help but be amazed at how much he’s grown

Talkin so well, so happy and silly

Makes me feel bad for him, really

It’s just that, when he grows up, the world will mold him

He’ll lose his blessed innocence, then

He’ll learn that the world isn’t always friendly

And that it’s not always safe out there.  See

Life has a way of getting to us

It makes us human; it breaks our trust

It places fear and anxiety within our minds

It turns us into beings that aren’t always kind

But, sadly, we have to learn these things

And live here until the King of Kings

Returns and changes things for His glory

Only then, will it be a happy end to this story.

I understand that feeling. This poem really speaks on the loss of innocence, and how we change as we get older. And I know what it's like to see young people and feel bad for them, since I have nieces and a nephew myself. I think their innocence is a gift though. As long as it lasts, it reminds us to look at good things in the world.

All children seem to want to grow up quickly, thinking that life will be awesome when they gain the opportunity to do adult things. When that happens we not only have the memories of our innocence but also the responsibility to protect the innocence of the next generation. That seems to be our role as humans. Even when we have to see what life really is, we learn the value of that innocence (something that we as children lacked) and try to protect it in others. So suffering as humans not only brings us together but makes us better parents and caregivers.
Well written and emotional. :)
