The Smoothest Stone

The Smoothest Stone

A Poem by Alexa Tarvid

I am,
In time,
Refined.

Like the rocks at the bottom of the ocean
My edges become smoother and smoother,

There is a reason
I'm sure,
That God has called me to these waves,
They fall differently than others,
The cold cuts
And the water drowns,

But who can I blame?
My surface so rough
From the path travelled
To get to this beach,

I lied to you,
When I said I
Didn't believe in broken people,
See somewhere back there
I lost a few pieces,

Somewhere back there
I could love unconditionally,
I could trust very easily,

See I lied to you
When I said there were no walls,
Because these waves have not been idle
Crashing them down
One by one.

This cold... cuts.
And this water... drowns.

But God has a reason
For this exhausting season,
And to fight the waves
Seems utterly useless.

Because in time,
I will be refined.

So Lord,
Make the cold...
A little colder.
And make the waves...
Just a bit stronger.

Because we have
A lot of work to do.

Because I want to be,
The smoothest stone in Your sea.
